Your £2000 SME Customs Grant: Step-by-Step application guide

Applying for the SME Brexit Support Fund is easy and straightforward. Here is a step-by-step guide to getting your hands on the cash, by Arne Mielken of Customs Manager Ltd.


UK's small and medium enterprises (SME's) trading with the EU and the UK can apply for a grant of up to £2,000 to pay for practical support for importing and exporting.

Six simple steps to apply for the SME Brexit Support:

  1. Check if you are eligible (go to this step)

  2. Decide if you are like training, bespoke consultancy or both (go to this step)

  3. Register for an account with PwC and apply for a grant (go to this step)

  4. Request a quote for the chosen training / consulting (or both) to upload to your grant account for approval. Email: info@customsmanager.org and we will provide you with a quote) (go to this step)

  6. Submit a claim form through your PwC account with proof of payment.

Step 1: Check if you are eligible

Your business must:

  • be established in the UK

  • have been established in the UK for at least 12 months before submitting the application, or currently hold Authorized Economic Operator status

  • not have previously failed to meet its tax or customs obligations

  • have no more than 500 employees

  • have no more than £100 million turnover

  • import or export goods between Great Britain and the EU, or moves goods between Great Britain and Northern Ireland

Your business must also either:

  • complete (or intend to complete) import or export declarations internally for its own goods

  • use someone else to complete import or export declarations but requires additional capability internally to effectively import or export (such as advice on rules of origin or advice on dealing with a supply chain)

Step 2: Decide what you want, training or consultancy or both

Step 3 Apply

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) administers the grants for HMRC. You apply online here:

You then will see your Company House Information, need to agree to the terms and can submit the application.


Once PwC has verified the information provided in your registration form, they will email you containing your username and a link to access their online application portal. The verification process will take approximately 2 working days.


Please note if you are not registered at Companies House they would require additional evidence in order to verify your account. A utility bill that specifies your business name and legal address would be required. If you can, please forward this evidence to their mailbox, with the subject line stating your Business Name. If you have not received your login details, please ensure you check your spam/junk folder. If you are unable to find the email, please contact them at support@customsgrantscheme.pwc.co.uk.


Step 4 Request and upload our quote to you

Contact us for a quote using the chat box or e-mailing info@customsmanager.org.

Step 5 Book and Pay for services

Our quote will allow you to accept it and once accepted, you can go ahead and book the course you like or we can schedule the bespoke consultancy. We will issue you with an invoice that you can get pay easily with a single click. You will be able to access our seamless & secure third party secured payment system. You will receive an instant confirmation that the payment occurred and be able to get the confirmation you need to upload to your grant account.


Step 6 Make a claim

Submit a claim form through your PwC account with proof of payment. Your funds will be paid within 30 days of your claim.
